This recording is a collection of charming duet and trio arrangements by Hans Lewitus of Central and South American songs and dances played by Aldo Abreu, Roy Sansom, and me. It was put together by Lewitus’ son Ricardo as a labor of love to honor his father’s memory. Hans Lewitus was a founding member of the Palestine Symphony Orchestra in 1936 and later became the principal clarinetist of the Symphony Orchestra of Peru. Upon his retirement, he took up recorder, which he taught along with clarinet and piano.
Although the arrangements only called for soprano, alto, and tenor recorders, we played them on a wide variety of sizes and styles of instruments – from sopranino to great bass, and Renaissance, Baroque, modern, and experimental types. I enjoy listening to this recording almost as much as I enjoyed playing on it!
